Chris Snyder / Miguel Montero = Willy Pipp / Lou Gehrig

On June 25th when Chris Snyder went on the DL I posted Montero’s Chance and suggest that you pick him up off your league’s free agent list.

While I’m not suggesting that Montero is going to have the career that Lou Gehrig did, this is in fact playing out much like a Wally Pipp / Lou Gehrig scenerio.  When Snyder was healthy enough to play again, he didn’t (and won’t) get his job back.  Snyder will likely be playing elsewhere next year.

Montero has been the full time catcher in the 2nd half and has put up All-Star 2nd half numbers for a catcher batting .347 with 9 HR’s, 34 RBI and 28 RS.

In my previous post I had mentioned that I had scouted Miguel personally and that the kid could rake. He’s been a back-up catcher for a few years now but he just turned 26 years old and now is his time. If you picked him up cheap on my earlier recommendation and you are in a keeper league my advice is to keep him. If for some odd reason he’s still a free agent in your league, (CBS Sportsline says he’s only on 77% of rosters - hard to believe) GET HIM NOW. - Blake Kearny
