The Doctor is now in...
Dr. Roto watched intently along with the rest of the baseball world as the deals unfolded. Let's take a closer look at the fantasy impact of each deal.
Remember, Dr. Roto looks at how the deals affect teams for this year (and next). He does not play for 2012 (unlike the Pirates)
1) Baltimore trades G. Sherrill to Dodgers for two minor leaguers
Impact: Sherrill becomes a setup man once again
Ripple Effect: Jim Johnson gets an opportunity to close for the Orioles
2) Pirates send Tom Gorzelanny and John Grabow to Cubs for Kevin Hart, Jsoe Ascenio, and a minor leaguer
Impact: Grabow will help the Cubs pen, but not your team unless your league has holds as a category. Hart may end up in the Pirate rotation (and should be respectable)
Ripple Effect: Dr. Roto throws out his Pirate t-shirt
3) Tigers send Josh Anderson to Royals for cash
Impact: Anderson does have some speed. If he gets some playing time, he may prove to be a nice sleeper.
4) Mariners trade W. Balentien to Reds for Robert Manuel
Impact: Not much, but don't be surprised if Balentien pulls a Laynce Nix and hits a few HR next year in Cincy
5) Mariners trade J. Washburn to Tigers for Luke French and M. Robles
Impact: Washburn should be pretty good in Detroit (a few more wins, nice big park to pitch). French will be a bit below average.
Ripple Effect: Keep an eye on Robles, who well may be a potential closer candidate down the road
6) Pirates trade Ian Snell and Jack Wilson to Mariners for Jeff Clement, Ronny Cedeno, and three minor leaguers
Impact: Dr. Roto likes Snell and thinks that he will be good in Seattle. Wilson is a decent player, but his stats shouldn't spike too much. Keep an eye on Jeff Clement who should finally get a chance to show that he can be a good major league hitter.
7) Indians trade Ryan Garko to Giants for Scott Barnes
Impact: Garko will finally get the chance to play...and he will be good.
Ripple Effect: Watch for Matt LaPorta in Cleveland. Hit has the tools to hit 30 HR very soon.
8) Indians trade Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco to Indians for Lou Marson, Carlos Carrasco, Jason Knapp, and Jason Donald
Impact: Lee is a stud in the NL. Go get him in NL only leagues. Francisco becomes a 4th OF. Carrasco can be a good major leaguer given time, as can Marson. Knapp will be fine way down the road
9) Pirates trade Freddy Sanchez to Giants for Tim Alderson
Impact: Sanchez should solidify the Giants IF and is a nice pickup. Alderson will be a good pitcher (in 2011)
10) Nationals trade N. Johnson to Marlins for Aaron Thompson
Impact: Johnson should come in and bat 2nd for the Marlins. Cantu goes to 3B, Gabby Sanchez and Emilio Bonafacio lose PT
Ripple Effect: Dr. Roto sends his resume to the Nationals for the GM position
11) Braves trade Casey Kotchman to Red Sox for Adam LaRoche
Impact: Nice deal for the Braves. LaRoche should settle in nicely and be a good run producer in Atlanta. Kotchman will lose some PT in Boston, but will be a solid defensive replacement in the 7th inning.
12) A's trade O. Cabrera to Twins for minor leaguer
Impact: Cabrera's value escalates as he should bat high in the order in Minny
Ripple Effect: Cliff Pennington gets the callup in Oakland. Beane wants to see if he can handle the job (Dr. Roto thinks he can)
13) Padres trade Jake Peavy to White Sox for A. Poreda, C. Richard, and two minor leaguers
Impact: Dr. Roto KNEW that Kenny Williams was working on something big. Peavy is a stud and may comeback for the last month of the season. The Padres get two nice pieces in Poreda and Richard. Both are worthy of pickups. Dr. Roto likes Poreda.
14) Indians send Victor Martinez to Red Sox for Justin Masterson, B. Price, and N. Hagadone
Impact: VMart will supply the Red Sox with another top bat. He should play a little catcher, 1B, and DH. Masterson will find his way into the Indian rotation soon. The other two minor leaguers will be good down the road
Ripple Effect: Mike Lowell loses time when VMart plays 1B
15) Blue Jays trade Scott Rolen to Reds for Edwin Encarnacion
Impact: Change of scenery may benefit both players. Watch out for Encarnacion if Cito Gaston can get him to stop pressing at the plate.
Winners: Red Sox, White Sox, Giants
Losers: Indians, Pirates, Nationals
