The Doctor is in...

Question #1: Lots of people jumping on the Giants band wagon here. I see Fairchild feels that way too. Your thoughts on them? Did they do enough at the deadline? Do they have enough offense to get it done? – Martin, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Martin: I think the Giants have overachieved this year. Barry Zito has been respectable, Brian Wilson has been a shut down closer, and Pablo Sandoval has proven to be the real deal. However, the Giants are lacking in OF production. Randy Winn seems to be showing his age, Fred Lewis has never gotten on track, and Aaron Rowand has caught the injury bug as of late. While Dr. Roto likes the addition of Garko, he doesn't think it will be enough to push them into the playoffs.

Question #2: I just picked up Justin Masterson. I see where you thought he might work his way into the rotation? What kind of expectations do you have for him for next year? – Barry, Penn State University

Barry: Dr. Roto is a fan of Masterson. When he had the opportunity this season to be in the Red Sox rotation, he took advantage and performed well. I would think that he will be a respectable starter next year (but look out for the possibility that he may end up as a potential closer down the line). Assuming he stays in the rotation, you should be able to count on 12 wins and an ERA of about 4.20

Question #3: Chris Tillman’s line hasn’t look so good so far. He’s still a top prospect right? – Phil, Baltimore. MD

Phil: What has Dr. Roto always preached as rule #1? PATIENCE! No worries here with Tillman. He will be good. It just may take more than two games.

Question #4: I noticed that Jon Lannan is available in my league and his starts are much better than other alternative choices (I’m looking for a starter). What are your thoughts on him? – Michael, New Brunswick, NJ

Michael: Dr. Roto is not a big fan of Lannan. He may win you a game or two where he puts up good stats, but take a look at these numbers: 142 innings pitched/ 145 hits; 58 K/42 W. Not even close to a 2:1 ratio. Plus he pitches for a bad team. This all adds up to mediocrity at its finest. Pass.

Question #5: I know you tweeted that you would not go and run out to pick up Jonathan Sanchez after his no hitter. But why not, this guy really seems to have found it. He’s 3-1 in his last 5 starts with 39 K’s in 33 2/3 innings? –Ferris, Atlanta, GA

Ferris: Baseball is a game of peaks and valleys. While Jonathan Sanchez has upside, Dr. Roto thinks he may be pitching slightly over his head. That said, why not let someone else overpay for him? His value couldn't be any higher than it is right now. Dr. Roto suggests you look at a guy like Scott Kazmir. His value is at a low point. You might be able to get him on the cheap and he should be good down the stretch.
