Once and a while for whatever reason, whether something was published somewhere that a few of you read, or something was said on the air waves that a few of you heard, a number of questions come in on the same topic. It’s kind of odd really, because it’s like when women live together they get their period at the same time….. and after reading us for ¾ of a season you readers are now starting to think alike. (Alright perhaps my thoughts are a wee bit convoluted, but the analogy works never the less.)
Friday, David Fry opined on who he thought was the best athlete to ever play the game of baseball. Today I will address the question - What was the best baseball fight?
For my money it was the Bud Harrelson vs. Pete Rose fight in the 1973 NLCS (straight from the Remember When archives ………)
During the third game of the NLCS, with the Mets leading 9-2, shortstop Bud Harrelson objects to the way Pete Rose upended him on a double-play ball. Rose objects to Harrelson's objection, and the two are soon throwing punches and rolling in the dirt. It wasn’t exactly an Ali vs. Frazier fracas, but as far as baseball goes, you don’t often get a one on one like that for more than a split second before everyone else has jumped in and interfered with the boxing or martial art techniques of the two gents that are on display.
To top off the theatrics the Mets won the series in five, but Rose got a measure of revenge with a dramatic game-winning homer in the 12th inning of game four. I would vote this baseball fight as one for the ages. – Josh Bolan
