The Doctor is in...

Question #1: What happened to Cole Hamels this year? Should I keep him for $19 next year? – Beverly, Minneapolis, MN

Beverly: Cole Hamels pitched a lot of innings last year as the Phillies made their championship run. He was banged up (shoulder, ankle) at the beginning of this season, but has come around to form recently. He is probably worth $19 next year due to his wins and K's. Expect a better year from Hamels in 2010.

Question #2: Will Mike Gonzalez regain his closers job from Rafael Soriano? – Robert, Syracuse, NY

Robert: Rafael Soriano was lights out for most of the year until his shoulder started to hurt. Gonzalez has been good, but if healthy, Soriano should close next year. The good thing about Bobby Cox is that he is not afraid to put his closer into the game in the 8th inning to get an important out. So Gonzalez will get saves regardless.

Question #3: Was there a MLB player that you thought would have an impact on MLB this year that never got called up? – Jerry, Huntsville, AL

Jerry: Great question. Dr. Roto was counting on the Pirates calling up Pedro Alvarez this year. Alvarez hit very well in the spring and was expected to do similarly in the minors. He got off to a very slow start in A ball this year and was finally promoted to AA later in the season. Watch for him soon; he has light tower power...he just needs to improve his contact rate and defense.

Question #4: Should I protect Jason Werth for $24? – Gene, Irvine, CA

Gene: Werth may be worth it! He will hit close to 35 HR and steal 15 bases, not bad, right? At $24 he is at value. You might want to see what you can get for him in a deal before you decide to keep him. He is definitely keepable, regardless.

Question #5: Since his no-hitter, in 69 innings Jonathan Sanchez has 86 K’s, a 3.04 ERA and a WHIP of 1.00. I remember you tweeting that it was a good time to trade him. Do you still feel that way? – Max, Santa Rosa, CA

Max: When I told you to move Sanchez it was because his value was at its highest. I was wrong...his value is even higher now! I like Sanchez, but I still don't trust him. Trust goes a long way to winning championships...and I need to see more consistency in Sanchez before I become a believer.
