As I'm sure you know by know, Giants pitcherJonathan Sanchez threw a no hitter last night. It was the Giants' 13th no-hitter and first since John Montefusco did it on Sept. 29, 1976, at Atlanta. Their last one in San Francisco came when Ed Halicki beat the New York Mets in the second game of a doubleheader on Aug. 24, 1975.
Sanchez is “only” rewarded with a no-hitter and not a perfect game because Juan Uribe committed an error in the eigth inning to allow the game’s only base runner. He struck out 11 batters, walked nobody, and didn’t allow a hit: a flawless performance.
So what is Uribe supposed to do about this? Does he avoid Sanchez altogether until Sanchez somehow forgets about it? Does Hallmark make a “I’m sorry I robbed you of a perfect game” card? Is there an appropriate fruit basket for that?
Regardless of how the pitcher and errant fielder handle this between themselves, of this I am certain: No one in the sporting world feels more like a dope today than Juan Uribe. - Michael Cruise
