First of all, Dr. Roto wants to thank Austin for his thought provoking post. Excellent observations here!
Let's do a diagnosis of the situation:
1) The Brewers are most certainly in contention for the division, just 2.5 games out of first. Dr. Roto agrees that the longer they are in contention, the more starts (and innings) Gallardo will pitch.
2) Gallardo is at 114 innings at the all-star break. Dr. Roto guesses that the Brewers are optimally looking at about 200-205 innings from him this season. However, please don't forget CC Sabathia last year was OVER USED as the Brewers made their playoff run. Will ownership push their young talent to the limit? Maybe, but I doubt it.
3) Pitch count. You may see more of it with Gallardo down the stretch. Perhaps they trade for a good arm in the bullpen and lower his pitches to 100-110. Keep an eye on that. It will help team morale if they can make a few deadline moves.
4) His injury was to his knee...not to his arm. Most pitchers do make the "innings" leap at this point of their careers.
That's the analysis,..here's the reality...DON'T OVER ANALYZE!!! Dr. Roto likes Gallardo and expects him to be the elite ace of the Brewers staff this year, next, and a few years after that.
The Doctor is out...
