Open Letter to Dr. Roto

Dr. Roto, I am a huge Milwaukee Brewers fan and would like to know your thoughts on Yovani Gallardo. Gallardo threw 187 innings combined between Nashville and Milwaukee back in 2007. Last year of course the innings were literally cut right out from under him. Given that he's going to be "the guy" for a long time do you see the Brewers monitoring how many innings and how deep he goes into games in the second half? Here is my take, please give me yours.
For teams like Kansas City or Arizona the decisions of how much to pitch Zack Greinke and whether to pitch Brandon Webb at all could be a lot easier based on the standings. Greinke hasn't shown any signs of injuries, but if the Royals are smart they will try to conserve the young arm. Likewise the Brewers have young talent to preserve, but they find themselves in a position where they are a contender at the break.

The media has been asking Doug Melvin about his plan to monitor Gallardo’s innings since before the season began. The answer hasn’t been clear. It’s obviously something they are concerned about, but they didn’t seem to limit him in any way in the first half of the season. In fact, he was often left in the game much longer and for higher pitch counts than most expected.

Gallardo’s injury last year was to his knee so I’m sure he did work to keep his arm in shape to limit the effects of not pitching. Honestly, I don’t know what the precedent is on an injury like this in a pitcher’s first season back. It seems like the Brewers plan is to ride him out as long as they can, but to try to limit his pitch count when possible. And, really, the season is almost assuredly lost without him so that’s probably what they have to do. Will it mean he’ll wear down in the second half or suffer an injury? I sure hope not… - Austin Marshall, Arcadia, WI
