A word about the Jimmy V. video that you see in the right hand column on the MLB and MiLB sites as we’ve gotten quite a few questions on this. One of the things we are very proud of is that Ultimate Franchise Baseball ™ will be providing a significant sum of money each and every year to worthwhile charities. This concept was inspired Jimmy V.’s speech. I had wanted to do something significantly charitable since the day I saw this speech more than 16 years ago.
This video probably bests sums up the reasons why philanthropy is important to society. I know times are tough with the economy the way it is, but anything you can give to a charity that is important to you, is vitally important to helping others.
To this day, based on the circumstances surrounding Jim’s health at the time and the dire straits he knew he was in, the speech is probably the most moving speech I’ve heard anyone give. If you are old enough and privileged enough to have watched this live on March 3, 1993 you will probably have the same tingling feeling I have when you watch it again. If you have never seen it before, watch it with someone you love and follow his advice. You will be better off for it. Jim Valvano died on April 28, 1993 only 56 days after the speech. – Mike Cardano
