On Home Runs in NY......

So wagering for a living is what I do, and I’m always looking for an edge. One of my buddies suggested that I might be able to play the over’s at Yankee Stadium and the under’s at Citi Field. He pointed to the home run trends at both as his basis for the idea.

So I did some research (you can get all the info you need from the Around The Horn) site and here’s what I found under the hood.

There has been a big buzz in MLB about Yankee Stadium and all the home runs being hit there and no doubt, it has proved to be a virtual launching pad. All kinds of home runs are being hit. Broken bat home runs, line drive home runs, high arching blasts, upper deck jobs. They are playing pin ball with the monuments!

But just 11.8 miles down the Van Wyck Expressway at Citi Field where Mets play the ball doesn’t go over the wall? It’s like there is an invisible force that keeps them from going over. Balls that do go over are so close to the wall that they all seem to be contested? It seems like almost every game has a stoppage of play for a HR review replay.

So everyone is blaming Citi Field for the Mets power outage this season, but is that really the case? Well lookie here what I found out………………

I took a look at some Mets team stats and came across some information that some of you may find surprising.

I learned that the Mets have hit more homeruns and have a higher homerun per game percentage at Citi Field than they have on the road.

In 26 games at Citi Field, the Mets have hit 18 homeruns.

In 29 games on the road, the Mets have hit 16 homeruns.
The Mets are ranked 28th in the majors in homeruns.

Of those 29 road games, at least 12 of those games were in hitter friendly parks including bandboxes in Philly and Cincy.

So for those of you who took solace in blaming the new digs for the lack of power in the Mets lineup, sorry to break the news to you. Cit Field has absolutely nothing to do with the Mets’ inability to hit homeruns, at least that’s how it appears after almost a third of the season.

The Mets simply are exactly what you see, and that is a team that is dangerously short on power. It’s not the stadium. - Robert Fairchild
