Question 1: Do you draft with a focus on different players (hitters vs. pitchers) if you are in an AL or NL only league vs. if you are drafting a league using all MLB players? – Paul, Atlanta, GA
Paul: Dr. Roto believes in what Bill Parcells, Jimmy Johnson, and every other great Coach/GM already knows: take the best player on the board when it's your turn to draft. You can't go wrong with that philosophy no matter the league you are in.
Question 2: If I am dumping, is it better to look to trade for keepers that are pitchers, hitters or just the best talent in return? – Brian, Trenton, NJ
Brian: There is an art to dumping. What you really are looking for are players that will impact your franchise for years to come. So that said, I would be looking at guys like Matt Wieters and BJ Upton...two young guys that will impact your roster in a big way.
Question 3: Johan Santana hasn’t been himself lately. It’s not just his last game. His last few outings have been sub-par. Is there reason for concern? Should I try and trade him. Do you think he’s hurt? – Sal, Lake Mary, FL
Sal: There are rumors out there about Johan: knee soreness, blister on the finger, pissed offed-ness at Danny Murphy, etc. I will let you in on a little tip: Santana is a lot happier (and healthier) when the team is in contention. So if you feel the Mets are contenders, stick with him. If you think they are pretenders, you might want to see what you can get. If you sell him for anything less than a stud (or two) back, you're making a bad deal.
Question 4: Would you pay more for a player that is at the top of his position (for instance short stop) than you do for an even better player at another position (for instance outfielder) because it’s harder to fill that position with a quality player? – Lawrence, Loganville, GA
Lawrence: You bet! Think about it...how many good SS are there versus how many decent OF? Would you rather have Hanley Ramirez and Juan Rivera or Khalil Greene and Jason Bay? If you answered Greene/Bay, please call my nurse for an immediate appointment.
Question 5: What is the single hardest category to fill? I say it’s WHIP, my buddy say’s it’s SB’s. Is it one of those or something else? - Seth, Somerville, MA
Seth: The single hardest category to predict is wins. Imagine Cole Hamels pitching 8 beautiful innings just to see Brad Lidge blow the save in the 9th. Sound familiar???
