So, it’s official: Tommy Hanson is coming to The Show

We’ll, the Braves sure had an interesting day yesterday. What’s the biggest news here?

(A) Braves release Tommy Glavin
(B) Braves bring up Tommy Hanson
(C) Braves trade for Nate McLouth

Well, as far as having an effect on MLB. (C) Braves trade for Nate McLouth. As far as having an effect on fantasy baseball… (B) Braves bring up Tommy Hanson.

So, it’s official: Tommy Hanson is coming to The Show.

The Braves’ top-rated pitching prospect is being brought from Class AAA Gwinnett to make his major-league debut in a start Saturday against Milwaukee. Hanson will move into the rotation, and his roommate Kris Medlen will move to the bullpen.

Braves general manager Frank Wren made the announcement Wednesday night after announcing that 43-year-old left-hander Tom Glavine had been released.

Hanson has been dominant against International League hitters, posting a 1.49 ERA and .169 opponents’ batting average, with 90 strikeouts and 17 walks in 66-1/3 innings.

His 3-3 record in 11 starts was the only thing modest about his statistics at Gwinnett, and that’s a reflection of poor run support early in the season more than anything else.

Instead of adding Glavine to the rotation, the Braves dumped the two-time former Cy Young Award winner and made the decision to bring up Hanson, who Wren said would make the Braves a more dynamic and competitive team than Glavine would.

So, the million dollar question…what do you bid on Hanson?

My personal opinion is much like offered on this site previously. You shouldn’t expect a rookie starting pitcher to be able to come up and routinely dominate, no matter how talented. As a matter of fact, it’s been my experience that they only hurt your WHIP.

If you really like him, I would let someone else spend their FAAB money on him and look to draft him in next year’s draft at a reasonable price where you can keep him if he turns out to be a stud. Rookie starters as rentals don’t seem like money well spent to me.

But this is why we play the game. Anyone who spent money on Jered Weaver a few years ago got a bang for their buck (don't really recall anyone else making that kind of impact intra-year since.)

That said, I am curious to see what Dr. Roto thinks….. - Josh Bolan
